A 23-year-old Las Vegas man was killed in a high-speed crash early Saturday morning.
Around 3:06 a.m., a GMC Sonoma was traveling northbound on South Jones Boulevard, near Charleston Boulevard, approaching a north to east "S" curve at a high-rate of speed. The pickup failed to follow the curve in the roadway and ran over the raised center median traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Jones Boulevard.
The pickup then ran off the side of the roadway and continued through the crushed rock landscape at 1301 S. Jones Blvd., striking several decorative boulders and trees before rolling over.
The unrestrained driver was ejected from the vehicle and the GMC Sonoma continued sliding northbound on the rooftop across Transverse Drive until it hit the corner of a building.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and determined the driver was beyond medical assistance. He was pronounced dead by a responding coroner's investigator. The man was identified as Josip Astalos.
Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
This is the 55th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction in 2016.
