Homicide numbers on the rise in Las Vegas

and last updated
There are still two months left in 2016, but the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has already responded to more homicides than all of last year.

The department reported 138 homicides so far this year. Last year, that number was 136.

The numbers are still lower than previous years - 157 homicides were reported in 2006.

Police say that there is a connection between crime rates and the number of officers on the streets. Therefore, Nevada lawmakers passed a bill to hire hundreds of new officers starting in 2017.
