A middle-aged resident jumped out of a window to escape the fire Sunday afternoon.
The fire started around 4:35 p.m. in the 6300 block of Brandywine Way, near Torrey Pines and Alta drives. Firefighters believe the blaze started outside on the patio and spread to trees, vehicles and sheds that were in the backyard. It eventually spread to the house as well.
"Had we had the 40-50 mile an hour winds that we had earlier in the afternoon, that could have spread to other houses," said Tim Szymanski of Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.
Everything in the backyard was destroyed. The fire gutted the inside of the house. It also caused heat damage to at least two neighboring homes.
