LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Everyone likes saving money. Coupons and reward programs certainly help. But some purchases can still take a mean bite out of your wallet. The good news is: deals are out there on even those big-ticket items. Contact 13's Tricia Kean has your secrets to saving.
"I usually try to find deals on things," says shopper, Emma.
"I would never ever pay full price," says a second shopper, Danielle.
Shoppers agree: The bargains are out there! Even for bigger items like appliances and furniture. A few tips can save you a lot.
First, give the salesperson a reason to offer you a discount. Let them know your buying multiple pieces or willing to take the floor model.
Second, don't be afraid to haggle - especially when looking for something like a new bed. Consumer Reports says it's not uncommon to get mattress discounts of up to half off the original price. Just make sure you're not paying extra for something you don't need.
"Ask questions to the seller. The details are what you need to know," says Danielle.
Third, timing is everything. Remember, some items are seasonal. You can find great deals on things like that pricey winter coat or a new grill. But you've got to shop at the right time.
"I definitely have bought bathing suits in the dead of winter in anticipation of the summer. It's easy to save money that way," says Emma.
Fourth, do your homework.
"Use the internet. Travel through the internet. Use it to your best ability," says Danielle.
Everyone knows online comparison shopping can help you save. But a lot of shoppers still don't take the time. The internet is your best tool for finding bargains with help from rebate sites and shopping apps like DealNews, SlickDeals, ShopKick, ShopSavvy, and RetailMeNot.
"I'll compare prices and try to order the one that's a little bit cheaper. Even if it's a couple of dollars, everything counts," says Emma.
