LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Christmas is over. Now you've probably got a couple of gift cards, or maybe a check from grandma. So what should you buy now that all of the holiday sales are over? 13 Consumer Advocate Tricia Kean looks at the best deals in January. Plus a few items you should avoid.
"They send brochures at the end of the month going into January," says Las Vegas shopper, Helen.
She says she always makes sure to know about the best available deals. This month, it's all about the bedding.
"I always come in here and look at those in January, for sheets and blankets. Because I know they're going to be on sale," says Helen.
Now's the time to find bargains on everything from sheets, to comforters, to pillows. You'll also find great deals this month on towels. Dealnews.com says, you can expect to find sale prices of 50 to 70 percent off both bedding and linens.
"I'll probably look for coats," says Susie.
Las Vegas shopper, Susie, plans on taking advantage of discounts on winter wear. Clothes make up the majority of January sales, as stores start making room for spring clothing. Some stores may be cutting up to 90 percent off their prices. But you'll want to move quick, because stock is limited.
Of course, you can also stock up on decorations, lights and more. Expect to find up to 85 percent off all Christmas decor this month. Some of last year's best deals on Christmas stuff was at Lowe's and Home Depot.
January is also a great time to buy furniture. Stores will be getting rid of a lot of items: like darker, winter-appropriate palettes and making room for new and brighter, spring colored furniture, that hits the market in February. Now there are some items you'll want to avoid in January.
"No electronics for me," says Helen.
She knows it's a bad time of year to buy anything that plugs in. Smartphones are typically only discounted when new models are out, and there's no new phones set for release. You may want to start the new year with a faster computer. But the back-to-school season is the best time to buy those.
Some TVs go on sale this month, in time for the NFL's big game. But the best TV deals are actually in November.
