LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — For the past 10 years, Torrey Russell has helped disadvantage kids turn their dreams into reality through his company, Broadway in the HOOD.
"I started Broadway in the HOOD because I grew up with nothing and I loved performing arts and sometimes I couldn't afford to do their activities so I created a program for our youth," Russell said.
Broadway in the HOOD offers free performing art classes throughout the summer to all kids and even adults.
Russell and his rising stars are getting ready to reveal their biggest production yet, "The French Defense."
"For 16 weeks the kids studied how to put together cameras, how to edit and direct and we worked with a local woman, Sheila Love to write, The French Defense," Russell said.
Russell said the movie is a short film about racial injustice and equality for all.
You can watch a free screening of "The French Defense" at Maya Cinemas at 2195 Las Vegas Blvd.
The movie is available February 26-28: 1p.m. and 7 p.m., March 1: 8 p.m., and March 2-4: 7 p.m.
