The apple didn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to Dani Rucker. The 19-year-old New York University student shares her father Darius Rucker’s singing talent, which you can hear on display in their new duet.

Taking advantage of their time at home together during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dani and her father Darius collaborated on a new song, “I Don’t Love You Like That.” Darius shared the new single on his Twitter page, writing, “With my daughter Dani back home from college, she joined on lead vocals.”

Dani’s clear-as-a-bell voice keeps the lead through each verse and the chorus, but sharp listeners will hear her dad’s distinctive voice in there as well.

This isn’t the first time that Dani has inspired her dad to make music. His 2008 single “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” is a tribute to how bittersweet it is to watch your kids grow up.

In addition to Dani, Darius shares a son, 16-year-old Jack, with his longtime partner Beth Leonard; former girlfriend Elizabeth Phillips is the mother of his eldest daughter, 25-year-old Carolyn. However, in July 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, Rucker announced on Instagram that he and Leonard were separating.

“Beth and I would like to share that after 20 years of marriage and much reflection we have made the decision to consciously uncouple. We remain close friends and parenting partners and continue to be each other’s biggest cheerleaders. Our priority will always be our beautiful family,” Darius wrote. “We have so much love in our hearts for each other and will continue to encourage growth and expansion in one other. Please be kind as we take on this journey, and we thank you for your love and support always.”

Even during this difficult time, he’s still focused on his kids, posting back in January about dropping Dani off at NYU to continue her studies.

While the COVID-19 has complicated in-person learning, at least Dani and Darius have made the most of their time at home — making beautiful music for us all to enjoy!

It’s no wonder that his kids are focused on academics, even with their artistic talents. Darius says that he’s not so sure he wants his kids to follow in his footsteps and work in the music industry.

“If they were to ask me what I wanted them to do singing would be the last thing I would want them to do,” Darius said in an interview with Life of Dad. “Go be an engineer. Go be a doctor. Go get a real job. Get a family and live a great life.”
