MOHAVE VALLEY, Ariz. (KTNV) -- The Mohave County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly shooting in Mohave Valley this past weekend.
Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives responded to a shooting incident around 10:55 a.m. Sunday. Initial calls came into the dispatch center regarding a man who entered a house and was being chased by a homeowner with a weapon. While deputies were en route, dispatch received another call about shots fired at the same residence and someone got shot.
Mohave Valley Fire Department personnel were staged nearby. Upon arrival, deputies contacted a man sitting on the steps of the porch to the residence, saying he shot someone. The man further said the shot person is inside his residence and he thought he was dead.
Deputies detained the man who was identified as Steven Edward Whiting, 58.
Deputies observed a weapon lying on a table on the front porch. The weapon was seized. Deputies entered the residence and observed a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying on the floor in the living room. Medical entered the residence and determined the male subject was deceased.
Investigations have determined that Whiting, the resident, was inside his house when the deceased followed a friend of Whiting’s into the house unannounced. The homeowner and the deceased were acquaintances.
Whiting told police he felt threatened as the deceased was demanding money. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said Whiting shot the deceased as the man was approaching him in an aggressive manner.
Autopsy results are pending. The identity of the deceased will be released after next of kin has been notified.
This case will be forwarded to the Mohave County Attorney’s Office for review to determine if any charges will be brought. Whiting is cooperating fully with authorities.
