ORIGINAL STORY
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -- A 6-month-old baby has died from injuries sustained after being bitten by a dog Monday.
The incident was reported around 1:15 p.m. at a residence in the 9100 block of Brilliant Prairie Court near Fort Apache Road and Centennial Parkway -- the home of both the dog and the baby. Las Vegas police said the mom was home alone with the child.
Police said the family dog was a pit bull mix.
The investigation initiated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Abuse and Neglect Section indicated the child had been playing in a walker near the dog when the dog attacked the child. The baby’s mother was able to stop the attack, but the baby had already suffered significant injuries.
The baby was rushed to Centennial Hills Hospital after the incident but later died.
"It's an absolute true tragedy," said Las Vegas police officer Larry Hadfield. "Regardless of how trusting you are of animals you have to make sure you are supervising. You have a family that's going to be grieving for today and the rest of their lives."
Police said no criminal charges are anticipated.
Animal Control is investigating.
